Louisville, KY. Sophomore)</p> <p>My piece is a sculptural representation of the verbal factors that play into suicide. It was created using packing tape, corn syrup, and paint. I chose to shape the human form the way I did to represent a weak, broken human form. The face is buried in between their legs and arm. One arm is hanging freely and blood is running out of the wrist. The figure is black to symbolize death and to contrast with the white words that are painted across the body. The words written are words that are used to inflict emotional harm by many teenagers. Some of these words are highly offensive but are included to make the message stronger.</p> <p>I personally have seen the effects of verbal harassment, I have been a lifeline for several high school students who have nearly committed suicide because of things that have been said to them. The things said triggered a massive emotional breakdown leading to thoughts or suicidal actions. Even certain members of my family have had struggles with suicide. Just last year my 18 year old cousin attempted suicide and still struggles with self harm. I my self have often thought of suicide.</p> <p>I created this piece using a tape casting method which involves wrapping tape around an actual human and then cutting it off and patching the cuts. The person I cast was my sister. The figure was to seem androgynous and without an ethnicity to make it more relate able to people viewing this sculpture. After the entire form was cast and taped together I then spray painted the sculpture. After the paint dried I then painted the words over the form in a way that would create motion and draw the eye all around the sculpture.</p> <p>Suicide might not seem like a very relevant issue to you but it is one of the largest leading causes of death among people our age [14-18] in the United States. Suicide is the third leading cause of death between people ages 15 through 24 [in the United States]. Even more disturbing is that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death between children ages 10 through 14 [in the United States]. Just because someone acts alright they might not be. Be careful of what you say you never know what someone is going through.
